「Looking Back on a Decision」

In contrast to last month, which was snowy, this month has been filled with sunny days. When I see cherry buds blooming, I feel the arrival of spring.

The tennis club activities began this month. We usually practice outdoors, but due to the rain, practice was canceled. Our first practice day turned into a morning session. While trying to return the ball that the coach hit, I struggled with the cold and sleepiness. After individual practice, we moved on to doubles practice. It was during this time that I realized I enjoy playing sports while communicating, and my love for tennis grew. Additionally, I cherish the moments when I talk with my coach in the car as he drives us from the practice ground to school after the morning session. He always lends a sympathetic ear, and when practice is called off, he treats us to doughnuts. He is truly a kind and warm-hearted person. The tennis club will remain active until the beginning of May, and I am eager to improve my tennis skills.

In addition, I created a research poster for a medical club recital to attract members of this club in Oregon next month. The theme I researched is the “relationship between teens’ use of social media (SNS) and loneliness.” My teacher and I discussed the research approach, and I decided to conduct a survey with thirty people. However, due to time constraints, I was unable to survey thirty people directly. Instead, I took a few moments during each of my classes to ask my classmates to participate in the survey. Additionally, I approached the teachers of each class, and only one teacher granted permission. Since that class had ten students, I needed to collect responses from the remaining twenty people who were not in my classes. I reached out to friends who were not in my classes and also asked members of my church. Finally, I collected all the survey data and summarized it in the poster. During the presentation, I will do my best to showcase my achievements so far.

Furthermore, during my sophomore year, I went on a field trip. At my school, each grade has a field trip event, and my grade visited the neighborhood church. We engaged in various activities and listened to seniors share their experiences about clubs, studies, and more. In the U.S., even the smallest games are taken seriously by many people. For instance, while playing table tennis with a friend during our free time, they returned the ball with incredible force. I was equally amazed by the pair playing air hockey next to me—they worked so hard and with such passion that I wondered if they were risking their lives. Their dedication was truly remarkable.

During one of the games, we formed a group and discussed “the most important decision in our lives.” When it was my turn, I blurted out, “When I decided to come to America.” A senior member of the same group and the tennis club responded, “It’s amazing that you came alone to a country you didn’t know. Are you still glad you made that decision?” Without hesitation, I replied, “I am glad I came.” At the time, I felt immense happiness when people around me praised my decision. Once again, I am grateful for choosing to participate in this study abroad program.

All in all, I felt that this month was full of many experiences as we started new activities, while at the same time I had time to look back on past decisions. Next month, I would like to continue to do my best in club activities and think about what I can do before I return to my home country.
