カナダ長期留学　谷本さん　4月レポート

現在、カナダ・ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州のSurrey Christian Schoolに長期留学中の谷本さん（高1）の4月レポートとなります。カナダのさまざまな場所を訪問したり、新たな授業にチャレンジするなど充実した留学生活を送っています。

「Two Months Left」

　I was surprised to realize that I only had two months left. At the end of March, I visited Burnaby to see the cherry blossoms. Many people were there, taking photos and enjoying the beautiful flowers. Some even danced and spun around while holding blossoms. Although I couldn’t identify their nationality, it seemed like a traditional event. I also noticed someone wearing something resembling a kimono.

　During my spring break, I spent time with friends and family. One day, we gathered at my friend’s house, where we made a cake, watched a movie, and had dinner. Making the cake was especially fun. On another occasion, we explored New Westminster and tried poutine, a traditional Canadian dish. Later, we spontaneously decided to visit the beach, where we enjoyed ice cream. Geese were scattered around, adding to the pleasant atmosphere. Despite our limited time, I cherished these moments with my friends.

　Easter fell on March 31st, and my host grandparents visited us. My host sister and I painted eggs, a new experience for me. I thoroughly enjoyed my spring break, surrounded by loved ones.

　In my Media Design class, I created an illustration for a coloring book before the break. Interestingly, during the break, my teacher and others traveled to Sierra Leone. They interacted with local students, who colored the same book we had created. Seeing their colorful artwork made me happy, even though direct communication wasn’t possible.

　As the new quarter began, I switched from Media Design to technology exploration. Specifically, we delved into woodworking, using potentially dangerous tools. Although I hadn’t worked with wood since elementary school, I felt both nervous and excited. Our current project involves crafting a wooden hammer, and I’ve had to adapt to using inches instead of centimeters.

　One day, I had a conversation with Konomi, who came to Canada as an exchange student from Josai and stayed here. It was a pleasure to connect with her, even if only briefly. Additionally, I watched a Korean movie with my friends, benefiting from the English subtitles to improve my language skills.

　In Bible class, we visited Fleet Wood Campus and interacted with first-grade students. Their presentation on space was interesting, and afterward, we played together. Observing their pure minds and unique perspectives reminded me of the importance of simple play. Such experiences are rare for me in Japan, and I appreciate the valuable learning opportunities they provide.

　In our social studies class, one of the assignments was to take a photograph of homeless people. This unique approach to learning was quite interesting. At Surrey Christian School, we explore various creative ways to connect the curriculum to God’s story. I appreciate this innovative approach.

　Recently, our school hosted a spring dance. I attended with my friends and had a great time. Additionally, I celebrated a friend’s birthday by going to a restaurant, visiting the mall, and singing karaoke. It was a very enjoyable experience.

　As the days pass quickly, I’ve realized that only two months remain. I intend to cherish each day, engaging in conversations with everyone and spending more time with my friends.

「残り２か月」

　留学期間も残り二か月となりました。三月の最後の週に桜を観にホストファミリーとBurnabyへ行きました。桜を観に沢山の人が集まり写真を撮っていました。中には手に花を持って回る伝統的なダンスをしている人もいました。どこの国の方かわからなかったのでどのような伝統的ダンスかは分かりませんでしたが見ている人も含めみんな笑顔で楽しんでいました。他にも着物のような服を着ている人を見かけました。ほとんど全ての桜が咲いておりとても綺麗でした。

　ある日友達の家に行きみんなで遊びました。みんなでケーキを作ったり、映画を観たり、夜ご飯を食べたり、楽しい時間を一緒に過ごしました。ケーキを作る際にはみんなの個性が出ており、様々なケーキが完成しました。一緒にとても楽しい時間を過ごすことが出来て嬉しかったです。

　また、他の日にはNew Westminsterへ出かけました。私たちはカナダの代表的な食べ物、プーティンをお昼に食べました。お昼を食べた後、突然海に行こうという話が出たのでNew Westminsterからは少し離れたEnglish Bay Beachに行きました。ビーチにはカモメやカナダグースが沢山いました。遠くまで出かけたのでリフレッシュすることが出来たと思います。また、久しぶりにEnglish Bay Beachを訪れたので気分がとても良かったです。帰る前にアイスクリームを食べました。一日中歩いた後のアイスクリームはとても美味しかったです。3月31日はイースターでした。この日は家族みんなで一緒に過ごしました。カナダではイースターは日本よりも大きなイベントと考えられており沢山の人が家族と一緒に時間を過ごしていました。私はホストシスターとイースターの前に卵をペイントしました。一回もやったことがなかったのですが、汚れることを気にせず二人で手を絵の具だらけにしながらペイントをするのは楽しかったです。私はこのように春休みを友達、ホストファミリーと一緒に過ごしました。

　私はMedia Designのクラスをとっており、春休みが始まる前に塗り絵用の絵を描きました。先生が他の生徒たちと春休み中にSierra Leoneに訪れました。その際Sierra Leoneの生徒たちが私たちの描いた絵に色を塗ってくれました。Sierra Leoneの子たちが楽しく塗り絵をしてくれたので嬉しかったです。直接コミュニケーションをとれることが一番良いのですが、直接のコミュニケーションはとれませんでした。でも、間接的にでも関わることができ嬉しかったです。Media Designのファイルプロジェクトが終わった後、新しいquarterが始まりwood workingのクラスになりました。Wood workingでは危険な道具を扱っており集中力が必要になります。小学校以来この道具を使っていなかったので、初めは少し怖かったのですが段々と慣れていきました。現在、木のハンマーを作っています。作る過程ではcmの代わりにinchを使うので混乱しますが、まだ始まったばかりなので楽しみながら、慣れていこうと思います。

　ある日、ホストファミリーと数年前の留学生であるこのみさんが電話をしていたので私も挨拶をしました。その後も少し会話をしてアドバイスや応援の言葉を貰いました。いつか話すことが出来たらと思っていたので、この機会に挨拶ができて良かったです。

　Bibleのクラスでは授業中にFleet Wood Campusを訪れ、grade 1の子供たちとコミュニケーションをとりました。みんなが私たちに宇宙についてのプレゼンをしてくれました。プレゼンを聞き宇宙について学んだ後、外に出て一緒に遊びました。鬼ごっこをしたり、遊具で遊んだりするなかで気づいたことがあります。それは、時々子供の頃に戻ったように遊び、一つのことに対して考えすぎないことです。このように授業で小学校を訪れ子供たちと関わることは珍しいと思います。他にも、社会の授業では実際にホームレスの方の写真を撮り、その写真について説明をしました。日本ではなかなか経験できないようなことをSurrey Christian Schoolでは経験できます。私は机に向かって勉強をするだけでなく、このように実際に目で見たり、関わったりする学び方も良いと思いました。

　私は友達とSpring Danceに行きました。Winter Danceの時と同様、とても楽しく2時間があっという間でした。他の日には、友達の誕生日会を開き、レストランに行ったり、モールやカラオケに行ったりして楽しみました。

　最初に書いた通りあと2か月しか残っていません。みんなと今以上に会話をしたり、出かけたり、一緒に勉強をしたりしようと思います。時間がとても早く過ぎていくので一日一日を大切にしていきたいと思いました。
