カナダ長期留学　谷本さん　1月レポート

現在、カナダ・ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州のSurrey Christian Schoolに長期留学中の
谷本さん（高1）の1月レポートとなります。
冬休み中も友達といろんな場所に出かけたことで、二学期に向け英気を養えたようです。

「A Fun Month」
　
　I only have five months left. During this month, I did a lot of things I had done in other months, and I started new things too. First, we had Christmas. I couldn’t write about Christmas in my December report. Before Christmas, I had a Christmas party at my friend’s house. We played games, watched movies, and decorated cookies. It was so much fun and we laughed a lot, so I was very happy. On Christmas day, I spent time with my host family. In my opinion, many people spend time with their partner in Japan, but in Canada, people usually spend time with their family. I received many presents from my host family, and I am so grateful. My first Christmas in Canada was a special thing. Finally, the New Year came. I had a New Year party with my host family and their family. We gathered on December 31st and celebrated the New Year. We talked a lot and took pictures. When it changed to January 1st, we watched the countdown to the New Year and used crackers to celebrate. Some people were doing fireworks at night. Starting the New Year in Canada was a new experience.
　I had winter break from December 23rd to January 7th. During this break, I went to my friend’s house, White Rock to see the light-up, went skating, visited Science World, and went to the Botanical Gardens. On another day, I went bowling with my host family and visited the Vancouver Aquarium with my friends. When we went to White Rock, there was a light-up. It was pretty. That day was cold, but we ate ice cream. I was surprised because the ice cream was so big. My friend and I didn’t expect that, so it was hard to eat even though it was yummy. Skating was so fun. I’m not good at skating, so I was a little bit scared. After 30 minutes, I could skate without help, so I improved a little bit. I went to Science World with my host family. Science World had plate spinning. I used to play that at elementary school, but the last time I played was seven or eight years ago. I wanted to do it again, so I tried. I thought I had forgotten how to do it, my body remembered, so I could do it. My sisters tried it too, but it looked hard for them. We had fun at Science World. I went bowling with my host family. I realized that Canada’s bowling and Japan’s bowling are very different. In Japan, the ball is big and heavy, and there are ten bowling pins. In Canada, the ball is palm-sized and there are five bowling pins are. At the beginning, I was doing well, so I thought it was easy. However, a few minutes later, I was getting worse and it was hard to control. I want to do it again.
　After bowling, we went to a Japanese restaurant. One of the restaurant clerks asked me, “Are you an exchange student?” We talked a little bit. I went to the Vancouver Aquarium with my friends. On the way to the aquarium, we had a little incident. We got off at the wrong station and while we were having a snowball fight, one of my friends stepped into a big puddle. The aquarium was so big. We had fun, including the little incident. In the evening, we went to a Japanese ramen restaurant. Most of the clerks were Japanese. My friends asked me, “Can you order in Japanese?” and I ordered in Japanese. While I was talking to the restaurant clerk, my friends’ eyes were shining. After we ordered and when the dishes came, they said “Thank you” in Japanese. They told me that when they use Japanese to speak to Japanese people, it feels so good and happy. I feel so good and happy when I use Korean to speak to Korean people, so I said the same word to them.
　My school’s schedule had learning celebrations. Learning celebrations are when we show our parents some of the things we learned in the first semester. We were preparing for the celebrations, but we had a snow day and it was canceled. It snowed a lot, maybe more than 25 centimeters, so we had 3 snow days. Also, we were supposed to go to White Rock during PE class, but that was canceled too. I wanted to go there, so I was a little bit sad. The second semester will start soon. I have Bible, Social, Math, and Media Design. I want to try my best. Also, I started to have piano lessons, so I’m going to practice a lot for the performance in June.

「楽しい一か月」

　すでに５か月が経ちました。今月も他の月と同じように色々な所へ出かけました。そして新しいことも始めました。はじめに、１２月のレポートに書くことが出来なかったクリスマスについて話します。１２月２５日のクリスマスの前にクリスマスパーティーが友達の家でありました。ゲームをしたり、映画を見たり、クッキーにデコレーションをするなどして楽しみました。とても楽しくみんなでずっと笑っており、その瞬間がとても幸せでした。クリスマスの日はホストファミリーと一緒に過ごしました。日本ではパートナーと一緒にクリスマスを過ごす人が多いと思いますが、カナダではほとんどの人が家族と一緒に過ごしていました。私はとても沢山のクリスマスプレゼントを貰いました。とても嬉しかったです。カナダで過ごす初めてのクリスマスはとても新鮮で新しく、特別な体験でした。新年もホストファミリーと一緒に迎えました。１２月３１日に新年を迎えるパーティーがありました。ホストファミリーとホストファミリーの家族が集まり、みんなで色々な話をしました。カウントダウンをテレビで見ながら、２０２４年になった瞬間にクラッカーなどでお祝いをしました。夜に花火を打ち上げている人もいました。カナダで新しい年を迎えられたことは新鮮で忘れられないものになりました。
　１２月２３日から１月７日までは冬休みでした。私は友達の家へ遊びに行ったり、White rockやBotanical Gardens、スケート、science world、ボウリング、水族館に行ったりして楽しみました。White rockへ行った時には綺麗なイルミネーションをみることもできました。その日はとても寒かったのですが、私たちはアイスを食べました。注文した後にとても驚いたのがそのアイスの大きさです。私たちが想像していたサイズの２倍の大きさで、美味しかったのですが食べるのが大変でした。
　ある日スケートをしにバンクーバーへ行きました。その時、頭が痛くなるような匂いが何度かしたので何の匂いだろうと考えていた時、友達に薬物の匂いだと言われました。日本では禁止されていますが、カナダでは合法なので通りかかった人からその匂いがすることもありました。スケートはとても楽しかったです。初めは手すりを掴んでいたのですが３０分後くらいには何も使わずに滑ることが出来ました。少し上達したので嬉しかったです。Science worldには沢山の面白い機械や絵などがありました。皿回しを貸し出していたので、とても久しぶりに挑戦してみようと思いやってみました。最後に皿回しをしたのは７年、８年前なので、もう出来ないと思っていたのですが身体が覚えていたようで、簡単にできました。ホストシスターも挑戦していたのですが難しいと言っていました。ボウリングをしに行ったときに驚いたことがあります。それは日本とカナダでボウリングのピンとボールが違うことです。日本では１０本のピンと重い大きいボールを使いますが、カナダでは手のひらサイズのボールを使いピンは５本でした。最初はそこまで難しくないと思ったのですが、後半になるにつれてコントロールが難しくなっていき上手くできませんでした。けれど楽しかったのでもう一度やりたいです。水族館には友達と一緒に行きました。向かっている途中で降りる駅を間違えたり、雪合戦をしている最中に友達の一人が大きな水たまりを踏んでしまったりするというハプニングがありました。水族館はとても大きく時間をかけてゆっくりまわりました。ちょっとしたハプニングもありましたが、とても楽しかったです。夜ご飯にラーメンを食べに行きました。友達に日本語で注文できるか聞かれたので、日本語で注文をしました。店員さんと私が日本語を使い会話をしているときの友達の目が輝いていました。注文後にオーダーしたものが来たときに、友達は「ありがとうございます」と日本語で伝えていました。その子は、実際に自分の知っている日本語で日本人と会話をすると気分がとても良くなると言っていたので、私も韓国語を使って実際に韓国人と話すとき、とても気分が良くなる事を伝えました。
　学校のイベントの一つであるLearning celebrationがsnow dayのため中止となりました。Learning celebrationとは今まで学んできたことを保護者の前で披露することです。私たちはそれに向けて準備をしていたので、とても残念でした。もうすぐ二学期が始まります。二学期には聖書、社会、数学、メディアデザインをとっているので頑張りたいです。また、習い事としてピアノも始めたので６月の発表会に向けてピアノの練習も頑張りたいです。
