アメリカ長期留学　安田さん　1月レポート

現在、アメリカ・オレゴン州のSweet Home High Schoolに長期留学中の安田さん（高1）の
1月レポートとなります。
アメリカに来て約半年、留学当初と比較して英語力が向上したことを実感しています。

「Happy New Year」

　In Japan, we have an original New Year’s greeting. I think it is a kind of manner unique to Japanese culture. Also, we have Oshogatsu, which involves a lot of beautiful Japanese foods. All kids are so excited for Oshogatsu. It is a big event for them because they can get a lot of money from their family. We call that Otoshidama. However, in America, they don’t have such customs. Some people in big cities like New York do a New Year countdown or party. However, in the town where I live, people just sleep. That was, of course, new for me. When I was in Japan, I made a wish for the New Year every year. The same thing happened in America. In my school’s culinary class, the teacher asked us, “What is your New Year’s wish?” Almost all students said, “I don’t have any” or “I have no idea.” These answers surprised me. I think they are not interested in the New Year so much. They are more interested in Christmas. Literally, some Christmas decorations were still in the town on December 31st. I think both cultures are splendid. To be honest, I missed Oshogatsu, though.
　When I finish my study abroad, some students from Sweet Home High School are going to study abroad at Josai High School for two weeks. My friends and my host family are going to join that project. A couple of my friends really love Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty or Kuromi. They told me, “You have to take us to Sanrio Puroland!” Of course, I will do that. I’m so excited and I want to take them to a lot of fun places in Tokyo. They always help me a lot, so I want them to make awesome memories.
　It’s January, which means my study abroad is half over. I think this half year has helped me grow a lot. Also, I feel like it went by so quickly because I experienced so many new things, such as new English words, new people, new connections, new friends, new places, new sports, and new experiences. These changes have changed my way of thinking. For the first few months after coming to study abroad, I could not understand any conversations. In those conversations, they used so much slang. I had never learned that slang in English class before, so I was shocked. They don’t talk like English on listening tests. They speak faster and faster. The main reason I decided to study abroad was to improve my English language skills. Now, I cannot speak English perfectly. But compared to when I first came to study abroad, I can have some easy conversations. I can try to talk to people. I can give compliments when I feel like it. These may sound easy, but it is not in Japanese. It is in English. It takes a lot of courage to talk to people in a language that is not my native language. If I talk to local people in a language that is not my native language, I can make friends from that country. I think that is amazing, so I still want to try to use English when I talk. When I come across a word or phrase that I don’t understand, I’m going to ask my friends and my host family to help me improve my English skills. I want to continue working hard so that I can use the English skills I have gained here in the future. I would like to enjoy the remaining half of my study abroad life.

「新年」
　
　「新年あけましておめでとうございます。今年もよろしくお願いします。」
　日本にいると一月一日にはこの挨拶をするのが一つの文化、またはマナーと考えられています。お正月には色鮮やかで伝統的なおせちを用意する文化もあります。さらに私たち子どもにとっては一大イベントとなるお年玉の季節でもあります。お正月という独特の文化も海外の方からすると新鮮なものなのかもしれません。一方、アメリカでの年明けはというと、日本のお正月のような大きなイベントはありませんでした。大きな街や都会だとカウントダウンをする人もいますが、私の友達やホストファミリーはみんな揃って大晦日の夜にはしっかり眠って元旦の朝に起きていました。新年が始まるからと言って、熱量は日本ほど感じることはありませんでしたが、新年の抱負のようなものをつくる文化はアメリカにも存在します。しかし、学校でその抱負について先生が生徒全員に聞くと、ほぼ全員が「特にない」と答えていました。アメリカではクリスマスに対する想いが果てしないので、それにほぼすべてのエネルギーを使い果たしてしまうのではないかと思いました。実際、クリスマス当日が過ぎたあとも、町のクリスマスの飾りつけは年末まで残っていました。クリスマスの気分を一年の締めくくりとして味わうのもそれはそれで楽しいのかもと感じました。ただ個人的には、あの和やかな日本のお正月が恋しいとも感じました。それぞれの国ごとにそれぞれの新年に対する考え方が違っていて、とても興味深かったです。
　スウィートホームハイスクールは私の留学がちょうど終わる頃、城西高校に二週間の短期留学を予定していて私の友達の数人もその留学に参加するそうです。そのため、友達とその二週間の留学についてよく話します。留学する予定の友達たちは、日本に行くことをとても楽しみにしています。私はすでに友達たちをどこに連れていくかという内容のリストを作って、友達たちと一緒に計画を立てています。ハローキティーやクロミなどのサンリオキャラクターが好きな友達がサンリオピューロランドに行きたいと写真を見せてくれたので、もちろん案内するつもりです。アメリカでたくさんの友達やホストファミリーにお世話になっているので、日本で素敵な思い出を作ってほしいと切実に思います。
　長期留学も半分が終わってしまいました。目にするものすべてが新しく、この五か月も本当にあっという間だったと感じます。私が留学に臨んだ主な理由は、英語の語学力を身につけたかったからです。英語を使って他国の人々とも話せるようになることで、将来の活躍の場が広がったり新しい人との出会いが増えたりと、大いに成長できると感じたからです。留学が始まってから、１～３か月ほどは本当に会話を聞き取ることさえもやっとでした。まず、普段勉強しているリスニングの問題とのスピード感の差に圧倒され、今までに習ったことのないスラングなどが日常会話には飛び交っていたのです。私はまだ流暢に完ぺきに英語を話せるわけでは決してありません。しかし、留学当初の自分と比較してみると、会話の内容を理解し自分が思ったことを英語で相手に伝えてみることの楽しさに気が付きました。言葉のキャッチボールを少しずつ英語でできるようになったと実感しています。もちろん会話の途中でわからない単語が出てくることもあります。そんな時はリピートしてみて意味を尋ねたり、後で調べて例文から学んで自分も使えるようにしたりと工夫をすることで英語力の向上につながっていくと思います。また、簡単な挨拶や相手の服装などが素敵だと感じたら自ら進んで話しかけてみると、新しい交友関係を楽しく簡単に広げることができました。これからも気になったことや興味のあることがあったら、自ら話しかけに行くことを心掛けたいです。
