カナダ長期留学　谷本さん　12月レポート

現在、カナダ・ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州のSurrey Christian Schoolに長期留学中の
谷本さん（高1）の12月レポートとなります。
新しいイベントや出来事を沢山経験し、あっという間の年末を過ごしたようです。

「Time quickly passed」

　The fourth month of my study abroad has already passed. This month also had many interesting events. I went on a field trip during P.E. class at the end of November. I wanted to see a pretty view, but that day there was thick fog, and it was too cold, so we could not see any view and our hands were frozen. After walking, we were tired, so we slept on the bus. Everyone started Christmas decorating before December. I also decorated the Christmas tree and house with my host family. That was so fun. At school, we decorated the class door. That was a competition. All class doors were decorated by students. We took some leaves from the forest nearby school. We didn’t win but I was glad because I could make a good memory.

　One day I went to the mall with my friends to buy a dress and shoes to wear for the winter dance. The winter dance is one of the school events. We sang and danced with everyone for about two hours. That was my first experience with a winter dance, and it was so much fun. We all enjoyed it so much and I will not forget the event.

　We had another Christmas party with our language partners. We separated into groups and made a gingerbread house. I made one with six friends. I hadn’t had many experiences to make gingerbread, so I was happy. We made genuinely nice gingerbread. It was a competition and if we didn’t keep clean the table, we were going to fail, so my friends and I kept our table clean. Also, we played a game. In the game, one person in the group pretended to be the Christmas tree and other people had to decorate them. I pretended to be the Christmas tree and other members decorated me. I could not see my appearance, so I was curious about it. Everyone decorated in their own style, so that was funny. After that, we ate dinner. It was Chinese dishes and it was delicious.

　One day, we learned about nutrition in P.E.  After learning about it we separated into groups and made smoothies. My group’s ingredients were frozen berries, banana, spinach, and frozen mango. I was a little bit worried about it, but the taste was so good. Everyone made one and we tried each other’s smoothies. After we tried them, we voted on which one we liked the best. Everyone used different ingredients, so I could learn which ingredients are good for smoothies.

　A surprising thing happened. Two goats came inside the school. When I was going upstairs, I saw a cage and could smell animals. Then I looked inside the cage, and it had two goats. I asked the teacher and the teacher said one of the students brought their goats from home. I heard a lot of people have goats in Canada. I was surprised. On December 9^th we had the first snowfall of this winter season here. I did not expect it, so I was surprised. I thought it would be a little bit snow, but it was not. My youngest host sister and I went to the park, and we played. We went sledding on a small hill. It was so fun. We tried to make a big snowmen and we made two big balls. We could not carry them to the house, so we left the balls in the park. We enjoyed it so much. After that, our hands and feet were frozen. On another day, I made a gingerbread house with family. We made amazing gingerbread.

　Surrey Christian School had a winter concert. I went to the winter concert because my friends performed. It took over two hours. The concert was amazing. After I watched the performance, I thought I wanted to try to play some instruments. Recently the Spanish teacher changed because the original teacher had a baby. The new teacher speaks more Spanish and faster, so it is hard to understand, but I am taking notes and trying to understand. I went to IKEA with my family. We ate lunch at IKEA and bought some stuff. We spent an enjoyable time. Another day, I went to the mall with my host sister to buy Christmas gifts. This month I also had presentations. I did Spanish and science presentations. Also, in English class we read a script, and acted the characters. The title of the novel was “To Kill a Mockingbird.” After we acted, we watched the movie. The movie was easy to understand. Winter break is soon. I want to try some new things during winter break. I experienced many things, so time quickly passed this month.

「あっという間の１２月」

　カナダへ来てすでに4か月が経ちました。今月は時間がとても早く経ったように感じました。今月も他の月と同じように沢山の事を経験しました。私は11月最後の週の体育の授業でfield tripに行きました。綺麗な景色を見たかったのですが、その日はとても霧が濃く見ることが出来ませんでした。さらに手足の感覚がなくなるほど、とても寒かったです。Field tripが終わった後は、私を含めみんな疲れていたので帰りのバスで寝ました。多くの人が12月に入る前からクリスマスのデコレーションを始めていました。私もホストファミリーとツリーを飾ったり家を飾ったりしました。特にクリスマスツリーの飾り付けは楽しかったです。学校でも教室のドアをデコレーションしました。教室のドアのデコレーションはどのクラスが一番かを競うものでした。私たちのクラスは学校の近くにある森に沢山の葉を取りに行きました。他のクラスも次々と飾られていきました。私たちは勝つことが出来ませんでしたが、良い思い出が出来たのでうれしかったです。

　Winter danceがあったため、私は友達とドレスと靴を買うためにモールに行きました。Winter danceは学校のイベントの一つです。学校のpac　という場所で開かれ、2時間以上みんなで踊ったり、歌を歌ったりしました。このようなパーティーは初めてだったのですが、とても楽しかったです。とても楽しくみんなで参加したイベントだったので忘れることが出来ない思い出となりました。違う日にはlanguage partnerがありました。Language partnerではグループに分かれてgingerbreadを作ったり、ご飯を食べたり、ゲームをしたりしました。そのゲームの内容はグループのメンバー誰か一人がクリスマスツリーのふりをして、他のメンバーがその人のことをデコレーションするというゲームでした。私がクリスマスツリーになり他のメンバーがデコレーションをしてくれました。みんなが自分たちのスタイルで飾っていたので楽しく面白かったです。Gingerbreadを作っている最中、みんなでコミュニケーションをとり、お互いのアイデアを取り入れたのでgingerbreadがとても可愛く出来上がりました。ある日の体育の授業でスムージーを作りました。私のグループは冷凍ベリー、バナナ、マンゴー、ほうれん草を使いました。とても美味しくできました。他のグループのスムージーもみんなで飲み、どのグループのスムージーが一番良かったかを決めました。みんなが違う材料を使っていたので何が美味しいのか知ることが出来ました。

　私は一つ驚いたことがありました。それは学校にヤギが来たことです。先生に聞いたところ生徒の一人が連れてきたと教えてくれました。カナダでは多くの人がヤギなどの動物を飼っていることも教えてくれました。

　12月9日に初雪が降りました。雨も降っていたため少ししか降らないだろうと思っていたのですが、すぐに積もっていったので驚きました。私とホストシスターはすぐに外に行き、そりをして遊んだり雪合戦をしたりしました。雪だるまを作ろうと思い大きなボールを二つ作ったのですが、家の前まで運ぶことが出来ず作ることが出来ませんでした。次に雪が降った時にもう一度作ってみたいと思いました。手足の感覚がなくなる直前まで楽しく遊びました。

　学校でwinter concertがありました。友達が演奏をすると聞き観に行きました。コンサートは2時間以上ありました。とても素敵な演奏で、観に行って良かったと思いました。スペイン語の先生に赤ちゃんが生まれたため新しい先生に変わりました。習っていないスペイン語を英語と一緒に使って話しているので聞き取れないところもありますが、ノートを取り自分から単語の意味を聞くなどして授業を受けています。今月もスペイン語と理科のプレゼンテーションがありました。だんだんとみんなの前で発表をすることに対しての緊張感がなくなっていきました。初めのころは発音が違っていたらどうしよう、途中で止まってしまったらどうしようなどと心配の気持ちが強かったのですが今では自信もついて、発表をしてみてわからないところがあったら相手に教えてもらおうという気持ちのほうが強くなってきました。Winter breakがもうすぐ始まるので、この期間に何か新しいことに挑戦してみようと思いました。今月も新たな楽しい経験が沢山あったので、時間が過ぎるのが早く感じました。
