カナダ長期留学　谷本さん　9月レポート

現在、カナダ・ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州に長期留学中の谷本さん（高1）の9月レポートとなります。
谷本さんは9月初めに日本を出発、城西高校の姉妹校Surrey Christian Schoolに留学中です。
温かいホストファミリーの下で、積極的に勉強に取り組んでいる様子が伺えます。

「My new life」

　The first month has already passed since I arrived in Canada. This is my first time in Canada, and I was excited and a little nervous before I came here, but now I’m having a great time. Vancouver has beautiful nature, and squirrels and rabbits are running around various places. I like nature and animals, so I’m glad to see them. When I arrived at the airport in Canada, Mr. Moto supported me, and I made friends at the airport, so we talked about things. After entry formalities, I went to Christian School. Mr. Moto told me about Canada, people living in Canada, school, and how to make friends on the way to school. When I arrived at school, teachers gave me schedules and some important documents. I was so excited to go to school.

　Finally, after going to school, I met my host family! My host family’s house is getting renovated right now, so I’m staying at my host grandparent’s house. When I arrived at their house, they accepted me kindly. My host sisters drew me a picture and gave me their recommended sweets which were yummy. I gave chopsticks to them, and they were pleased and practiced right away. At home, I’m called Summer because it’s difficult for my younger host sister to pronounce Sumire. For the first few days until school started, my host mother and father took me to the mall where I bought a hoodie because Canada was colder than I thought. Also, I watched some movies with my host sisters who explained them to me when I couldn’t understand them.

　Finally, school started. Although it was nerve-wracking at first, it was also exciting because I made friends at school. I have English, science, P.E and Spanish class. The classes are difficult to understand especially English and Spanish class. In English, I must read stories and search for the meanings of vocabulary words and explain them in my own words. In Spanish, I am learning many words. It is hard to learn in English, but I’m having fun. I think it is a nice experience to learn other countries’ languages in English. My science teacher is very kind and always explains things easily when I ask her questions. I already have some homework and tests. My sister has homework too, so we do it together, and when I can’t understand something, my host sister, host father, and host grandmother help me. My friends also help me at school. They are so kind. We teach each other some words in our native languages, which is fun.

　At lunchtime, we talk about many things such as how our last class was, what we did over the weekend, and what our next class is. We can talk about many things, so I like lunchtime. Every Friday, we have a church service at chapel where students sing songs and play instruments. The singer’s voice is very beautiful. I’m spending a great time with my friends at school. After school and on weekends, I play basketball and volleyball with my host sisters and host father who is good at playing basketball. It’s fun! We also made a cake which tasted delicious. My host mother made us Filipino food which was also delicious. She cooked us very delicious foods, so I want to make Japanese food for them one day.

　Almost a month has passed, but I’m having a great time in Canada. Sometimes I think about wanting to see my family and friends back home, but my family, friends, schoolteachers, and many people are supporting me here in Canada. So, I’ll do my best and not give up when things get difficult. Christian School and Canada have many events that I want to enjoy!

「新しい生活」

　私がカナダへ来てからすでに一か月がたとうとしています。私がカナダを訪れるのは今回が初めてです。カナダに来る前は楽しみな気持ちはもちろん、少し緊張もしていました。しかし私が感じていた緊張もすぐ消えました。今は友達もでき、とても楽しく過ごしています。バンクーバーは自然が多く動物も住んでいます。りす、うさぎ、鳥などが道端に姿を見せるので動物好きの私にとってとても嬉しいです。私はバンクーバーの空港で友達が出来ました。その子は留学経験があったので入国審査がどのような感じかなど教えてくれました。入国手続きは１時間以上かかりましたが無事終えることが出来ました。入国審査後サポーターの基さんに会いました。私は最初に学校へ向かいました。基さんは多くのことを学校に向かっている途中に教えて下さいました。例えば、カナダについて、カナダに住んでいる人のことについて、学校のことやどのように友達をつくるかなどです。学校で先生と会い、私に学校のスケジュールや大切な書類を渡してくれました。少し話もしました。先生方は優しく緊張することなく楽しく話すことが出来ました。

　学校へ行った後、ついにホストファミリーと会いました！ホストファミリーの家はリフォームをしている最中なのでホストファミリーのおじいちゃん、おばあちゃんの家にステイホームすることになりました。ホストファミリーが私のことをあたたかく迎え入れてくれたので、とても嬉しかったです。ホストシスターは私のために「Welcome!」と紙に書き、飾ってくれました。それだけではなく、二人のおすすめのお菓子もくれました。お菓子は美味しく、とても親切にもてなしてくれたので幸せでした。私は箸、箸置きをプレゼントしました。プレゼントした時みんな喜んでくれ、すぐに練習してくれたのでとても嬉しかったです。私は家でSummerと呼ばれています。下の子にとってSumireの発音が難しかったらしく新しい名前が出来ました。私はこの新しい名前を気に入っています。学校が始まるまで何日かあったので私をモールに連れて行ってくれました。カナダは私が思っていたよりも寒かったのでモールでパーカーを買いました。モールに行くほか、家で映画を姉妹二人と見ました。私が理解できなかった時にどういう意味か聞くと分かりやすく説明してくれました。私たちは学校が始まるまでずっと一緒に遊んでいました。

　学校は５日から始まりました。初日は緊張していましたが、友達がすぐに出来たので楽しみという気持ちのほうが強くなりました。学校の授業は理解するのがとても難しいです。私は英語、理科、体育、スペイン語の授業を受けています。特に英語とスペイン語の授業は難しいです。英語の授業では小説や物語を読み語彙の意味を調べて自分の言葉でまとめなければなりません。スペイン語の授業では多くの言葉を学んでいます。英語でスペイン語を学ぶのは大変ですが授業は楽しいです。英語でほかの国の言葉を学ぶことはいい経験だと私は思います。理科も難しいですが先生がとても優しく、私が質問をした際には丁寧に分かりやすく教えてくれます。すでに課題、テストがあります。ホストシスターも課題があるので一緒に取り組んでおり、お互い分からないところを教えあっています。ホストシスターだけでなく、ホストファザーも教えてくれます。学校では友達が助けてくれます。みんなとても優しいです。韓国人の友達と中国人の友達がいつも簡単な日本語で話しかけてくれます。私たちはお互いに簡単な単語を教えあっており、新しい単語などを知ることができるのでとても楽しいです。

　お昼ご飯の時間は５人、６人で「さっきの授業どうだった？週末なにして過ごした？次の授業なに？」など様々な話をしながら過ごしています。多くのコミュニケーションがとれるので私はお昼の時間が好きです。毎週金曜日には礼拝が学校の中にあるチャペルという場所で行われます。生徒の代表者が自分自身の経験を語ったり、歌を歌ったり、ギター、ドラム、ピアノ、バイオリンなどの楽器を演奏します。歌声、楽器の音色はとても綺麗です。私はこうして毎日とても楽しい時間を友達と学校で過ごしています。放課後や休みの日はホストファザー、ホストシスターとバスケットボールやバレーボールをしたり、ケーキなどを作ったりしています。ホストマザーはフィリピン料理を作ってくれました。初めて食べましたがとても美味しかったです。私はいつか日本の料理を作ってあげたいです。

　最初の一か月が過ぎましたが、私は楽しく過ごしています。時々日本にいる家族や友達に会いたいと思う時があります。家族、友達、学校の先生方、多くの方が私のことを応援してくれているので自分のベストを尽くし、大変なことがあったとしても諦めず頑張りたいです。学校やカナダには多くの行事があるので楽しみたいです！
