カナダ長期留学　谷本さん　6月レポート

本校の姉妹校・カナダ・ブリティッシュコロンビア州のSurrey Christian Schoolに長期留学していた谷本さんは、約10か月間の長期留学課程を修了し、6月に無事帰国いたしました。今回が最後の現地レポートとなります。

「Precious memories」

　In the last month of my study abroad, I had some memorable experiences. Firstly, during the holiday, I visited my friend’s house, and we spent time together. We even went to 7-Eleven, where I was surprised by the prices—they were much higher than at other stores. Another day, I joined my host family in celebrating my host grandmother’s birthday at my host grandparents’ house. We went to a Japanese restaurant and enjoyed delicious food. I think she had a wonderful birthday.

　At school, we had our final language partner session. After classes, we played games and shared hotdogs. It lasted about two hours, and I appreciated the opportunity to communicate with many people through the language partner program. On the same day, I had a piano recital. Although I felt nervous, it went better than expected. I was especially glad to play the piano inside a church. I also visited my friend’s house and had enjoyable conversations with her and her host family. Another time, my friends and I went to Burnaby, where we had hotpot and bingsoo at a café. It was a lot of fun.

　As an exchange student, I didn’t have to take the government numeracy and literacy tests that grade 10 students faced. Instead, I spent time in the cafeteria and focused on my work. Later, I went to a fitness center with a friend, and we worked out together. Although I thought it would be hard, the workout was fun. After that, we went to a café and an Asian market. I was surprised that they had a lot of Japanese snacks and food.

　Our dance practice for the performance was intense—we practiced for about three hours most days, and on the day of the performance, we stayed at school until 9 p.m., including rehearsal time. We brought some food, drinks, and snacks and had a party during practice. That was the last day of practice, and it was fun to have that kind of party.

Although we had fun, we also faced final exams. The way we took the Social Studies exam was interesting. During that exam, we used Word and could refer to our class notes. Even with our notes, it was still challenging to answer the questions.

T o commemorate the year, I received a yearbook filled with pictures, including our ID photos from September. Everyone signed each other’s yearbooks and wrote messages, creating sweet memories. I felt like I was going to graduate because everyone was signing for each other even though we are not in grade 12.

　On the last day of school, we skipped the first block to rehearse our dance performance. Other students were preparing for their own performances. After all the classes were over, we gathered in the PAC (Performing Arts Center). That’s when we performed our dance. Although the organizers made a few mistakes in our turns, resulting in us having to perform suddenly, we managed to pull it off. We all had a blast during our final performance, so I felt very happy.

During the assembly, something unexpected happened. The screen displayed “Farewell to Japanese exchange students.” My Japanese friends and I were taken aback; we hadn’t expected this. Jessica delivered a heartfelt speech, and then our friends sitting next to us stood up and moved to the front. I was surprised and emotional. Teachers and friends gave me presents and heartfelt letters. That moment is unforgettable.

　After school, I took many photos with my friends. Everyone got emotional and cried, but we were still smiling and laughing. I can’t fully express my feelings in words, but I can say that I’m grateful for my time at SCS and for the wonderful friends and teachers I met.

　One day, my friends threw a surprise party for us. They decorated the walls and tables with pictures they copied. It was beautiful and unforgettable. I also visited Penticton with my host family. The people there were all tall and incredibly kind. The 4-and-a-half-hour drive was worth it. The scenic views of nature along the way were very pretty. We had an amazing time together.

　I want to express my gratitude to everyone who supported me, especially the teachers and friends. These 10 months from September to June flew by, but they left me with precious memories that I’ll cherish forever.

「大切な思い出」

　長期留学最後の月が来ました。私は休日に友達と一緒に楽しい時間を過ごしました。その時に驚いたことが一つあります。それはセブンイレブンに置かれている商品の値段が他のストアと比べとても高かったことです。ある日私はホストファミリーと一緒におばあちゃん、おじいちゃんの家を訪ねました。その日はおばあちゃんの誕生日だったのでみんなでお祝いをし、ご飯を食べに行きました。日本料理を食べに行ったのですがとても美味しかったです。学校では最後のlanguage partnerが行われました。放課後2時間ほどゲームをしたりホットドッグを食べたりしました。最後まで楽しむことができ、沢山の人たちともコミュニケーションをとることが出来ましたLanguage partnerが終わった後にはピアノのリサイタルがありました。少し緊張していましたが、楽しもうという気持ちのほうが強く、無事演奏をすることが出来ました。教会でピアノを弾くことが出来たらと考えていたので、今回その夢を叶えることができ、とても嬉しかったです。ある日私は友達の家に遊びに行きました。みんなで麻辣湯を食べに行き、カフェにも行きました。あいにくの雨でしたが、雨の中でも楽しい時間を過ごしました。

　ある日、grade 10の生徒がnumeracy、literacyのテストを受けることになりました。このテストは政府からのものなのですが私はやる必要がないと言われたので、受けませんでした。その日はカフェテリアで課題などに取り組みました。私は友達とフィットネスセンターに行きました。大変だろうと思っていたのですが、一緒に運動をしたのできつくなく楽しかったです。その後にカフェに行ったりアジアマーケットに行ったりしました。そのマーケットには沢山の日本のお菓子や飲み物が置かれていたので驚きました。学校ではダンスの練習がありました。いつもは3時間程の練習時間なのですがこの日は9時まで学校に残り練習をしました。最後の練習日だったので飲み物やラーメン、お菓子などを持っていき、ちょっとしたパーティーを開きました。忘れられない素敵な思い出になりました。私たちはYearbookを受け取りました。Yearbookとは9月に撮った証明写真を含め、思い出の写真が沢山載っている本です。見返していると懐かしい写真が沢山出てきて、最後のページにみんなでサインをし合いました。中には長いメッセージを書いてくれる子もいました。私たちはとても楽しい時間を過ごしましたが、最後のファイナル試験もあったので友達とわからないところを教え合い準備をしました。私は社会の試験の受け方に少し驚きました。試験中、Wordを使い授業中にとっていたメモを見て質問に答えることが出来ました。メモを見ることはできたのですが、それでもまだ難しかったです。

　学校最終日、リハーサルを行ったため最初のクラスに行くことが出来ませんでした。全ての授業が終わったあと、最後のassembleが開かれました。このassembleの途中に私たちはダンスのパフォーマンスをしました。順番の入れ替わりにより突然のパフォーマンスになったのですがみんなでその場を楽しむことが出来たと思います。突然スクリーンに　“日本人留学生さようなら”　という文字が映し出されました。私たちは想像もしていなかったのでとても驚きました。Jessicaが話を始めると同時に隣に座っていた友達が立ち上がりプレゼントを渡してくれました。友達や私がとっていたクラスの先生からのメッセージもあり、とても嬉しかったです。忘れることが出来ない嬉しい、素敵な思い出になりました。改めてSurrey Christian Schoolに来ることができ、沢山の素敵な先生、友達に出会うことができ幸せだと思いました。

　ある日、友達が私たちのためにサプライズパーティーを開いてくれました。壁やテーブルには沢山の思い出の写真が飾っており、とても感動しました。私はペンティクトンにホストファミリーと行きました。ここから約4時間半のドライブでした。向かっている途中の景色がとても綺麗で目を離すことが出来ませんでした。私たちはペンティクトンでとても楽しい、ゆったりとした時間を送りました。

　私は今までサポートしてくださった方に感謝し、先生方、友達にありがとうの言葉を伝えたいです。私が経験した全てのことはとても貴重で忘れられない思い出になりました。今の感情をうまく言葉で表すことはできないのですが、カナダに来ることができとても嬉しく思います。新しい出会いもあり、沢山の素敵な方々に恵まれました。9月から6月までの10か月間、あっという間でしたが、とても素敵な思い出となりました。
