カナダ長期留学　谷本さん　5月レポート

カナダ・ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州のSurrey Christian Schoolに長期留学中の谷本さん（高2）の5月レポートとなります。社会の授業においてプレゼンテーションを行うなど、本人にも新鮮な体験となったようです。

「Memories」

 Time is flying so fast. It feels like yesterday’s events happened a few weeks or a few months earlier. During the last week of April, I had language partners at school. We played games, and it was a competition. After playing the games, we had lunch. The lunch consisted of Tonkatsu and Tteokbokki, which were delicious. One day, I joined the youth group for volunteering with homeless people. It was my second time participating in this volunteering activity. Initially, we packed potatoes into bags, which took quite a while due to the large quantity. Later, we moved to the kitchen and helped clean up the dishes. The whole process took about two hours, and it was heartwarming to see everyone working together to build a nice community.

 After volunteering, we went to McDonald’s to celebrate a birthday. We had cakes and donuts, and I had a great time. On another day, I hung out with my friends and made muffins. We also played a game called Dutch Blitz, which was my first time playing. It was so much fun that we couldn’t stop once we started. Later, I went to a sushi restaurant with my friend Jessica, Japanese exchange students, and Chinese international students. Afterward, we headed to the movie theater to watch “Spy×Family.” We watched it in Japanese with English subtitles, allowing other Japanese members to relax, including myself.

 In our social studies class, we embarked on a significant project related to World War II. The project involved creating a PowerPoint presentation, designing an infographic, and writing an essay. Each student could focus on their own country, so I chose Japan as my topic. Researching for the PowerPoint was the most challenging part because Japan played a significant role during WWII. During the presentation, we not only shared our own country’s story but also learned about other nations’ experiences. It was fascinating to hear from classmates representing various countries. In our PowerPoint, we even included our ancestors’ experiences, which was eye-opening for me. Until then, I knew very little about my own family’s history during that time. The project held great meaning for me. I had the opportunity to discuss Japan’s role in WWII and gain insights into other countries’ perspectives. Additionally, I wrote an essay of over 600 words on the topic “what events I would like to change and how I would alter their course.”

 We continued learning about WWII continued after the presentation. During our lessons on Korea and Japan during the war, our teacher mentioned my Korean friend and me. She observed, “I think Japanese-Korean relations are improving because you two are sitting together and having conversations.” It was a novel experience for me, and my friend and I pretended to argue with each other, and then laughed. Apart from the historical project, I also participated in a current issue presentation. Our group focused on “deepfake,” which posed its own challenges.

 In math class, we had a unique project: making pizza. This experience was entirely new for me. Not only did we learn about math, but we also got to enjoy delicious pizza. Our school, Surrey Christian School, organized a donation drive for our sister school, and we managed to raise a large amount of money. It was surprising and heartwarming. Another memorable event was our “stride.” We visited Fleetwood Campus and walked with our buddies. The experience was pleasant, and it provided an opportunity for meaningful communication.

 One day after school, I played basketball with my host sister and host father. I was happy that I could play basketball. On another occasion, I watched a musical with my friends at school. The performance was delightful, and we laughed a lot. Later, we went to the theater to watch a Korean movie. Afterward, we spent time together at a friend’s house. That day, I was able to see the Northern lights—a first in my life. We excitedly ran around trying to catch glimpses of it.

When Mother’s Day came, we visited my grandmother and grandfather’s house. We also enjoyed dinner at a Greek restaurant. These moments created beautiful memories. Additionally, I went to English Bay with a friend. We relaxed on the beach, taking pictures and enjoying the scenery. However, not all experiences were carefree. Once, while at the beach, two guys approached us. They claimed to be good at Japanese and tried to strike up conversations. At first, we talked with them, but when they persisted in wanting to hang out, we became uncomfortable and declined. It was as a reminder to stay cautious in unfamiliar situations. With only one month left, I’m determined to cherish each day and create more meaningful memories.

「素敵な思い出」

　時間があっという間に過ぎていき、5月も終わろうとしています。昨日の出来事が何週間、何か月も前に起こったように感じ、この一か月がとても早く過ぎました。4月の最後の週にはlanguage partnerがありました。いつものようにみんなでゲームを行い、お昼ご飯を食べました。残り少ないlanguage partnerを楽しむことが出来て良かったです。ある日、私はyouthに参加しました。その日はホームレスの方へ向けたボランティア活動を行っていました。以前一度参加したことがあったので今回が二度目でした。始めは倉庫でジャガイモを袋に詰めていく作業を行いました。数え切れないほど沢山のジャガイモがあったので、この作業は時間がかかりました。途中からキッチンの手伝いを頼まれ、お皿を棚に戻したり綺麗に拭いたりしました。約二時間のボランティア活動でした。小さい子も参加しており、お互い助け合いながら良いコミュニケーションをとることが出来ました。ボランティアが終わった後にはマクドナルドへ行きました。一人のメンバーが誕生日だったので、みんなでお祝いをしてケーキやドーナツを食べました。とても楽しい時間になりました。後日、友達と一緒にマフィンを作ったりゲームをしたりしました。このゲームはDutch Blitzといい私は一度もプレイをしたことがなかったのですが、とても面白くみんなで長いこと遊びました。ある日、私はJessica、日本人留学生、中国、台湾の留学生とお寿司屋さんに行きました。美味しいご飯を食べた後には映画館へ行きスパイファミリーというアニメを観ました。音声は日本語で、字幕は英語で鑑賞しました。日本語を使い会話をしたので少しリラックスできる時間になったと思います。

　社会の授業では大きなプロジェクトがありました。このプロジェクトは第二次世界大戦についてのパワーポイントを作り、プレゼンテーションをすることでした。その他にもエッセイを書いたりinfographicを作ったりしました。第二次世界大戦については日本のことについて調べました。第二次世界大戦中、日本はとても沢山のイベントを行ったので調べ作業がパワーポイントを作る過程で一番大変でした。パワーポイントには祖先の経験も含まなければなりませんでした。そこで、両親と連絡を取り合い様々な情報を教えてもらいました。このプロジェクトを行うまで、私は祖先の経験など聞いたことがなかったので良い機会になったと思います。プレゼンをした際には様々な国について学ぶことが出来ました。エッセイは600語字以上で、“第二次世界大戦について、自分の国が行ったイベントを変えることが出来るなら何をどう変えたいか”というトピックについて書きました。簡単ではありませんでしたが、自分の考えを書くことが出来たので満足でした。このプロジェクトは私にとって意味のあるものになったと思います。その後も第二次世界大戦についての授業は続きました。韓国と日本についての話をした際、先生が韓国人の友達と私をメンションしました。そして、“現在の韓国と日本の状態は大丈夫だろう、お互い隣に座り会話をしているから”　と言いました。今までこのような状況下になったことがなかったので新鮮な体験でした。また私はcurrent issueのプレゼンテーションも行いました。私たちのグループのトピックはdeepfakeでした。これを機にdeepfakeについて知ることが出来たので良かったです。

　数学の授業ではピザを作るというプロジェクトがありました。数学を学ぶために実際に授業中にピザを作るというのは新鮮で驚きました。数学を学んだだけでなく、おいしいピザも楽しめました。Surrey Christian Schoolは姉妹校のために募金活動を企画していて、私たちは多額の資金を集めることが出来ました。驚きと感動の体験でした。もう一つの思い出に残るイベントは、「ストライド」です。Fleetwood Campusへ訪れバディーと一緒に歩きました。コミュニケーションも沢山とることができ良い経験になったと思います。

　私は学校で友達とミュージカルを観ました。前回と同じで面白く観に来た人をとても楽しませてくれました。後日私は韓国の映画を観に映画館へ訪れました。その後友達の家に遊びに行きました。この日、私は人生で初めてオーロラを観ました。とても綺麗で、ずっと眺めていました。ただ、オーロラは消えたり現れたりを繰り返していたので友達とあちらこちら走り回り写真などをとりました。忘れられない素敵な思い出になりました。カナダにも母の日がありました。おじいちゃん、おばあちゃんの家へ訪れ一緒に時間を過ごしました。ギリシャのレストランにも行き美味しいご飯を食べ、良い時間を送れたと思います。ある日私はEnglish Bayへ友達と訪れました。一つ驚いたことは日本人の方がとても多かったことです。道を歩いているとあちらこちらから日本語が聞こえてきました。ビーチで私たちはくつろぎ、写真などを撮っていました。そこへ突然二人の男の人が声をかけてきて、私たちと親しくなろうと、一人は知っている日本語を話してきました。少し経った後、“時間はあるか”　と聞かれたので　“もう帰るところだ”　と答えると、“少しでも時間があるか”　などと聞かれました。時々このような危険な出来事が起こりますが、そのたびにいつでも注意を払わなければということを思い出させてくれます。今月も沢山の大切な思い出を作ることが出来ました。はじめに言った通り、時間があっという間に過ぎていき1か月しか残っていないので一日一日を大切にしていこうと思います。
