「County, Culture, and People」

It has been about nine months since I started living in state of Oregon. The area where I live in Oregon is especially beautiful, blessed with rivers and forests. Therefore, everywhere I look, I am in nature, which is a complete change from the city in Tokyo where I am used to living. There are no tall buildings, so I can look out at the blue sky to the fullest. If I wake up early on a clear morning, I can enjoy the beautiful orange and pink morning sunlight shining into my room through the window. In addition, the air smells of fresh grass, flowers, and trees, and it is very refreshing. I realized that living in Tokyo and living here both have their own great qualities.

In the United States, this is the season for a party called Plum, a party for students who are seniors. Everyone wears dresses or tuxedos to the party. In the winter, the school also holds a winter formal party, but I felt that the plum was more gorgeous and larger-scale compared to the winter formal. There was even a DJ for the party, and we could request and have him play our favorite songs. Also, the party place was decorated very beautifully, with many small light bulbs decorating the ceilings like stars. I had been longing for the American high school party culture from watching foreign dramas and movies. I was very happy to be able to join the party because it was something I could not experience in Japan.

One weekend I went to a big mall with my friends. We went to a sushi restaurant for lunch. I found American sushi to be much more glamorous than Japanese sushi. What shocked me the most was that the sushi was deep fried in oil. I had never heard of deep-frying sushi before in Japan, and if I had tried it, I would have been scowled at by the chefs or worse. But when I tried it, it was unexpectedly delicious. However, what I am trying to say is that it is not sushi. It is another food that is not sushi. It was like a snack, if I may use an example. Also, in the U.S., rolls seemed to be more common than nigiri. The rolls are not like kanpyo-maki, kappa-maki, or tekka-maki, and of course they are glamorous as well. First, the names were shocking. For example, Volcano, Kick Boxer, Shotgun, and Miso Sexy were all unique ones I had never heard of. I enjoyed my lunch with a sense of adventure, as if I was riding on an attraction.

In terms of food, what American high school students eat for lunch at school is different from that of Japanese high school students. In Japan, students usually bring their own lunch boxes or buy lunch sets at the cafeteria. This may not be the case in all areas of the U.S., but at least at my school, I do not see many people bringing their own lunch. Most students either eat lunch provided by the school or eat lunch at a supermarket or fast-food chain near the school. I sometimes have lunch provided by the school, but it is quite a high-calorie meal, so I usually go to the supermarket with friends and eat as healthy a meal as I can. When I was in Japan, I never thought about eating healthy or eating vegetables by myself, but now that I can make my own choices, I feel a sense of responsibility and my way of thinking has changed.
I went skateboarding with my friends after school. I recently watched a movie called Mid90s, which is set in America and depicts the lives of teenagers with skateboarding. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing to be easily influenced by movies, but I feel like it’s a good thing because it gave me an opportunity to try new things. When you hear the word skateboarding, some people may have a bad image, but that’s not the case at all. Skateboarding is now an Olympic sport. I had never skateboarded in Japan, so at first, I was a little scared to get on the board. Still, I tried skating with the help of a friend. And guess what? It was a lot of fun. It was like the first time I started riding a bike. Skateboarding can be a great sport if we don’t skate in the wrong place and are careful about safety.
